I love browsing the children’s section at my local library. There’s so much creativity and heart in today’s children’s books—it honestly blows me away. Some stories have left me speechless, others moved me to tears, and plenty have made me laugh out loud. Today’s authors bring so much emotional intelligence to their work, creating stories that resonate not just with kids, but with adults too. Here are some recent favorites:

The Day You Begin

by National Book Award winner Jacqueline Woodson and two-time Pura Belpré Illustrator Award winner Rafael López

There will be times when you walk into a room and no one there is quite like you.

There are many reasons to feel different. Maybe it's how you look or talk, or where you're from; maybe it's what you eat, or something just as random. It's not easy to take those first steps into a place where nobody really knows you yet, but somehow you do it.

A Kid is a Kid is a Kid

by Sara O’Leary’s and illustrator Qin Leng.

A group of kids share the silly questions they always hear, as well as the questions they would rather be asked about themselves. Makes you wonder - what questions SHOULD we be asking kids... or even other adults!? Maybe we can put some of these ideas into practice, and get to know the people we meet in entirely new ways.
